Chadlington First Team rounded off their Division One season with a resounding 3-0 win at Wootton Sports on Saturday.
Going into the game Chad needed to avoid defeat to ensure that they finished above Wootton in the league. A win would also secure them of 4th place with Bampton unable to catch them.
It was a much changed squad once again that was selected but a strong one nether the less. Alfie Peachey, Matt Chadwick, Mark Corbett and Ashley Godin all returned. Joe Bennett also returned in goal following a lengthy lay off through injury.
The game was played on a hot, sunny afternoon and on a bumpy dried out pitch. Wootton started the game brightly and almost got an early lead but from then on Chad dominated the half. The lead was taken after 15 minutes via Alfie Peachey and it was thoroughly deserved. Further chances fell to Peachey and George Slatter but the lead couldn’t be extended before the break.
At half time Chad should’ve been out of sight but now needed to weather a second half onslaught from Wootton.
It was backs to the wall for the first 20 minutes as they struggled to reclaim their dominance. James Hobden and Sean Bennett were introduced into the midfield to freshen things up. On 70 minutes Chad finally got their breakthrough as the impressive Ethan Bennett fired in a long range shot to make it 2-0.
Wootton heads dropped and Chad could relax. Shortly after Jacob Hazlewood completed the scoring to make it 3-0 at full time.
The win was thoroughly deserved and reflected the improvement in the teams performances in recent weeks which has centred around effort and determination.
The win secured 4th place in Division One, and while they remain firmly behind the top three on points it does reflect an improvement on the previous two seasons and gives a firm foundation for the next.
